I have always been passionate about the beauty industry. I used to love going to all the year’s best professional makeup events. I would travel quite often in pursuit of this passion! But then I bought a house, got married, got a full-time job, and had two wonderful children. Let’s just say finding time for myself is hard sometimes! If I stay around town, I always end up spending time with the kids, even if I wanted to dedicate  whole day to myself. So what do I do? Drop the kids at their grandparents and travel! And of course, I haven’t lost that passion for beauty.

My favourite beauty events are In-Cosmetics (Barcelona, Spain), Cosmoprof (Bologna, Italy), Professional Beauty (London, UK), and Hair and Beauty (Frankfurt, Germany). If you don’t know these cities, don’t worry! They are super easy to navigate, the people are wonderfully hospitable, and best of all you can book all your accommodations online beforehand. I usually do that! So take some personal time and immerse yourself in the world of beauty!

Professional Beauty 2016, London, UK

The next Professional Beauty London trade show will be held from February 28th to 29th in London, 2016. In 2015 over 34,000 flocked to London explore and learn from 450 exhibitors. You are sure to find all the latest innovations in makeup at this event.  The other great aspect of this fair is that you get to meet the people behind the products and discuss the uses and benefits face to face. There are also tons of incentives and discounts that you won’t find anywhere else. And we can’t forget the six live stage programs and five seminars that will inspire you and give you tips on improving your techniques, skills, and business. In-Cosmetics 2015, Barcelona, Spain

This is the top business event for personal care products worldwide. This year the In-Cosmetics 2015 fair runs from April 14th to 16th and is held at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via. The exhibition, trade show and fair will exhibit the latest innovations in cosmetics, personal care, and beauty. Usually there are more than 8,000 guests in attendance! This fantastic event brings together the world’s top suppliers, marketers, research and developers and formulators in one of the most vivacious cities on the planet.

Cosmoprof 2015, Bologna, Italy

Now in its 49th year, the Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna trade show is THE leading event worldwide for the professional beauty industry. It is a very important platform from which new products in the cosmetics and wellness industries are launched. In 2014, more than 90,000 square meters were occupied by the fair. The exhibition space was dedicated to all areas of the industry, from perfumes to natural health, beauty salon to nails, contract manufacturing and packaging to spa, there is something for everyone. Take a trip to Bologna, which is also the gastronomical capital of Italy, for what is sure to be another revolutionary beauty event.

Hair and Beauty 2015, Frankfurt, Germany

Last but not least, this fair takes place from August 29th to 30th. The Hair and Beauty 2015 Frankfurt is designed to create a platform for updates in trends and styles in the world of beauty. You will learn about the hottest new techniques in hairdressing, as well as how to stand out from the crowd. Joanne MacFadyen Jewellery Designer

I seem to be a favourite choice for Scottish Jewellery designers showcasing their work and Jo's 'Eden Collection for her 'Look Book' was filmed last month in St Andrews. Armed with a bucket of glitter, a beautiful model who I've been helping build up her portfolio we headed to location on a hot Summer Day. Kate Pickering from  Vanilla Ink also joined us and took some behind the scenes shots. Gillian Gamble photographed and Dylan Drummond filmed. I created 2 hair looks and kept the same makeup look for the day. Although some of the team were reticent about my suggestion of our model entering the stream for artistic purposes we were glad as the finished results were great.

Jane Gowans Jewellery Collection S/S & A/W 13

A year ago I created the hair and makeup for Jane Gowan's 'Captain's collection 2013 ' filmed and styled in one day on Broughty Ferry Beach in Dundee, Scotland.
For the S/S collection I used a vibrant blue MAC  eyeshadow to complement the outfits, with hair styled in a messy, plaited updo.
For A/W I used russet, earthy tones that matched the model's copper hair that I swept in a textured beehive.
Jane's collection can be purchased from stockists including Harvey Nichols as well as her own online shop.

Edinburgh Transgender workshop & Film

The following morning after arriving home from Malta I delivered a workshop to a transgender group in Edinburgh. There were a number of themes and topics delivered by a wide range of professionals, mine being effective male to female transformation to help enable individuals to feel comfortable applying make up effectively. Before a live demo with one of the group where I shared my recommended products and tips, attendees were able to view a short edit of a film that I produced with Helene Barclay. She is a cross-dresser with amazing camera skills and expertise and in the film myself and my model answer questions and discuss the topic of male to female transformation. The full short film will be available before the end of the year as a download and has  received favourable feedback.

NO. 1 Band "SCOUTING FOR GIRLS'  video for 'MILLIONAIRE' 
In May I was booked to provide hair and makeup for the band and actors - a sunny beach in Lossiemouth in Scotland was the perfect location to film. Great cast and crew from Sony and the production company and lots of laughs. I always like to combine work with pleasure and fitted in a visit to my friend Anna  in Aviemore before leaving early in the morThening to drive to the location.
The highlight of the day was watching Ross Laird do about 5 simultaneous somersaults through the air without the need for a start bounce on a trampoline-amazing!

I was introduced to Jenny Overend when I was in need of a model for a magazine photoshoot and  agreed it would be mutually beneficial to work together again. Jenny had only did a few shoots before so was relatively a novice, however the camera loved her and she took direction very well.  As a consequence, I gave myself a project: I arranged for 3  photoshoots on 3 consecutive days all with a different hair/makeup clothes, location and photographer. As Jenny is under 16 , her lovely mother Annie was attendant at each session. I'm not sure why I didn't arrange hair and makeup assistants for either shoot-probably because I wanted to really push myself I suppose...

As well as creating the hair and makeup for the shoots I also styled them with my own outfits and accessories as I hang onto clothes from way back (excluding look 1). There wasn’t a great deal of time to plan my looks but I was very pleased with how they evolved and ultimately turned out and I think that all 3 photographers did a great job and I couldn't possibly choose a favourite:they are all unique in their own way.

Shoot 1 took place at Contrast Studios  in Glasgow with fantastic photographer  Oliver Schneider. I wanted to create a natural beauty look with minimal makeup with hair left flowing with plaiting round front of head on some and pulled back into a ponytail in others.I used MAC Mineralized liquid foundation and Strobe cream and other illuminating products to enhance Jenny's great skin.

Lighting was  mainly natural light  and in some shots artificial lighting . The shoot was pulled off beautifully by Oliver who I have had the pleasure of working with for the past few years now (our collaborative work has been published on a couple of occasions). Oliver is primarily a fashion and wedding photographer and very creative.Jenny brought her own outfits apart from one that I brought along.

I asked photographer Ronny Cathro to shoot Look 2 which originally was to be an outdoors shoot but due to bad weather was  hastily done indoors at the Queens Hotel, Dundee. Ronny has years of experience as a journalistic photographer with DC Thomsons and has also photographed many celebrities and is a great wedding and family portraiture photographer.

I have had a  love for Biba and photographer Sarah Moon since a small girl and was given a Biba poster from a relative: the poster is long gone but I was able to find the exact same one to replace it on ebay.

In the gallery on this site is the first  homage to Biba I did and I had been wanting to create another for a while but just didn't have the time. The look is not a true copy of the Biba looks but my interpretation as I would have found it pretty boring to replicate exactly.

I created a look for Jenny using Kryolan and MAC cosmetics and curled her straight hair so it was almost frizzy. The hair was finished by using a scarf that matched one of the colours used in her eye makeup. I ‘erased’ her eyebrows with Glue and  makeup and created new thin brows. The dress had wing-like sleeves and with the addition of a pair of my vintage black suede platform clogs Jenny was my walking Biba creation.

The lighting was atmospheric and complemented my makeup well. I particularly love the shot taken of Jenny reflected in my makeup mirror as she looks almost Pierrot-like.

For the final session I wanted to create 2 Lana del Ray style looks in one session. I was initially just going to do the one with the backcombed hair but as  I don’t like to make life easy on myself I decided to throw in  another look with a floral hairpiece that she has been frequently photographed with. Small problem – I had no available head piece so I pulled apart the rose and spider bracelet I created for a Sugar Skull shoot I had done last year with Oliver and model SulaPowell. I attached the roses to a frame and pinned to the hair in about 10 mins before photographer Julie Christie arrived. Julie is primarily a wonderful family portraiture and boudoir photographer but I actually met her at a wedding- click here to view Julie’s work.

I lied when I said there was 3 looks there is actually 2 others to come- one for ‘Invite’ magazine S/S 13 that is published in May (I am the hair/makeup artist and feature writer since the first edition) and one look to happen soon that will be a nod to the looks of  the forthcoming  ‘ Great Gatsby’ film.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them and as for Jenny I predict great things in the future…

Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award 2013

This year I have once again been asked to provide makeup for this annual award that showcases young, talented  UK designers. Last year we did 2 shoots,and I provided both hair and makeup one on the beach at St Andrews and the other in a scrapyard-very different but equally great. What is even better this year is that I will be doing makeup only for the 5 female models.  2 aspiring makeup artists will be given the opportunity to assist me on what will be a great shoot. The models will be photograohed outdoors reclining in and on some Alfa Romeo cars.

As well as  being one of the sponsors of  the event I will also be writing about the shoot for a feature in Invite magazine's S/S  2013 edition and will also include the final images.

MERRY XMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM SC MAKEUP ARTISTRY!

Wishing you all a fantastic Xmas and New Year and many thanks to all my friends, colleagues and clients for an amazing year! I have been lucky  to have had a number of pieces of my work featured in publications throughout this year once again. Even better has seen me appointed as hair and makeup artist and feature writer for 'Invite' magazine and am looking forward to our first shoot for 2013 showcasing David Blaney's designs.  I will also be sponsoring The St Andrews Charity Fashion and will be creating hair and makeup for 'The Alfa Romeo Young Designer  of the Year award.I continue to move forward and hope to  build upon past achievements and successes and feel blessed that I am lucky enough to make a living from something which I absolutely love to do. This year, I have also had many Bridal parties who I have loved to make beautiful on the most special day of their life and a few models I've worked with have booked me for their special day.

CORE Magazine feature

                                           



My hair and makeup are featured in the October edition of CORE magazine with the feature entitled 'Young Friesians' . The magazine is aimed at local business and culture in Falkirk. The shoot took place in the Summer with stylist Laura Villanueva. Great photography from Dylan Drummond    with models:Eilidh Bell and Shannon Kerr. Hats were from Mairi Brunning Millinery, corsets from 'Bad Kitty.
There is a funny story behind this shoot, I was asked to be the hair and makeup artist by Laura and upon arriving at the farmhouse in Angus I was surrounded by a number of dogs barking round my car. Now anyone who knows me is aware that I have a fear of dogs I don't know due to experiencing an attack a couple of years ago, therefore there was no chance of me leaving my car to do hair and makeup. I have swam with sharks, had large snakes around my neck and been near alligators and am fine but jumpy round certain dogs (sounds weird I know). The crew and models were also running late so  while I waited I set up my hair and makeup station in the boot of my car in the wheat field half a mile up the road (no dogs). I was also not hanging about for makeup touch-ups as the dogs were still present so was a fairly quick day for me. In spite of the initial set back I am really pleased with the feature -well done to everyone involved. Some of my favourite images are here .

Loved creating the hair, makeup and styling for this last minute shoot for Halloween with Photographer Oliver Schneider and model Sula Powell.The hair and accessories were all made by hand. Many thanks to Peter Menzies of 'The Vine' Dundee for use of his fantastic premises. You can rent office space or hire for events in this beautiful listed building.

Where has the time gone!!? Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of the past 6 months of the working life of a full time professional makeup artist based in Dundee Scotland but working internationally.

I have been fortunate enough to work with both Perth Theatre, Scotland  on their production of 'The Odd Couple'   when I was hired upon recommendation in September to provide hair and makeup consultation.

Earlier in March I was hired for Dundee Rep's production of Steel Magnolias. I had a wonderful 2 weeks working with the  brilliant ensemble cast, production team and the amazing Barbara Rafferty
Pre-production I cut, dyed and styled the a large number of wigs for the cast and restyled each day, including matinees. It was a fabulous 2 weeks and massive thanks to actress Annie Louise Ross who I had filmed with previously and who had recommended me.



The following Dundee Rep production was 'The Tempest' and was hired for special effects burn consultation for Annie's character.

In the Summer I made a video  aims to provide techniques for transvestites to look like a natural confident woman. I love drag makeup but the purpose of the video is to give men the confidence to look naturally good as a woman. This was based upon feedback from transvestites I know who wanted me to create this. We are hoping to release it very soon as it's had to be put on the back-burner due to work commitments from myself and the cameraman who's being editing it.

Jane Gowans is a Scottish based jewellery designer who I first met at a model shoot when I styled her hair and makeup. Since then I have worked with her on 3 occasions to create the hair and makeup for her last collection 'Geology Rocks'  & Colourways  -striking and unusual pieces  that "incorporates the naturally occurring facets & structures found in rock forms with a high-end fashion aesthetic".

St Andrews Charity Fashion Shoot.

This month I was hired to make up 22 male and female models for the the St Andrews FS Charity shoot. I asked Mary Meikle to assist me with makeup for the male models. I have worked with the group for a few years now and they are so creative full of ideas and energy. All the models are students at St Andrews University as well as being very photogenic. One of the girls,Andrea, exclusively models for Karl Lagerfeld.

In February this year I worked with the St Andrews FS committee for the joint FS 2012/Alfa Romeo Young Designer of the  year competition on 2 shoots to showcase the shortlisted designers outfits. Janine Clark  was the winner and well-deserved. The photographers for the shoots were Kayhan and  Gillian Gamble. I loved all the entrants outfits and they can be seen here.   Gillian is a muti-talented individual based in Scotland-here is more of Gillian's work and projects. 

As every year I am fortunate to be be fairly continuously booked with weddings throughout the whole of the year and as a result have been fortunate to have met so many wonderful people and to be a small part of one of the most important days of their lives. Nothing is too big or too small and I have travelled throughout Scotland to attend. On a serious note nothing saddens me more when I receive calls or emails from Brides who have been let down at the last minute by makeup artists or hairstylists and usually I can't personally help as am usually booked but I do try to pass on to other trusted professionals when I can. I am lucky also to be recommended by venues and photographers and have had a wonderful year so far with many happy bridal parties. There are lots of things I've left out but these are some of the most significant things that has happened over the last 6 months and I hope you've enjoyed sharing these with me. x

Where on earth has the time gone!!!!? Part 1

Blimey- I know it's a well-worn cliche  but time certainly does fly when you're busy! I have neglected blogging and been posting mainly on my FB page so all of my work over the past 6 months is on that also. Please join my page and share with friends to keep up to date.
I have split this into 2 parts-PART 1
I managed to fit in 2 trips to London- in May it was for relaxation purposes but being the happy workaholic I am I decided to fit in a women's business meeting (in between shopping and shows) in Kensington with the Athena Network who have groups throughout the world  /. They made me very welcome and I was very impressed with the calibre of professionalism and warmth of the group and I made some great contacts. Unfortunately they don't have a group available in Scotland which is a pity.

LOVE! I did buy some Pixi 'Endless Silky Eye Pens which I really love -they last for ages and are mid-range priced and in lots of colours. The only down-side is they wore down quicker than I would have liked but apart from this I would recommend.

My second trip was London Fashion  Week A/W 13 in September assisting Makeup Artist Lan Ngyuen Grealis at Vauxhall fashion Scout where I was asked to do 6 shows and was also interviewed by Vauxhall Fashion Scout reporting team  
The  Body Shop provided the makeup for the shows and I really love their shimmer cube palettes.


I have been fortunate enough to have been part of assisting at LFW for past 4 years since my training at the Academy of Freelance Makeup (LONDON/NEW YORK)

and have assisted twice with them and twice with Lan. It's all been interesting and have learned so much but as I have to self-finance this I need to focus on paid work and continue to professionally develop myself in all formats.


As part of the Invite Magazine Team responsible for Hair and Makeup and feature writer I reported from backstage  behind the scenes at some of the shows and took some pictures- the deadline for submission was tight however it got written while traveling back from London-to read my article you can buy or subscribe to 'Invite' and the current edition will be available next week (see stockists by following link).

Talking of 'Invite' - as well as my LFW feature I have 4 other features which include my hair and makeup , one is a children's Cowboys and Indians' shoot and the other 2 are a Sweeney Todd/Mrs Lovatt Fancy Dress look where I explain how to achieve the look. My friend Raymond Wood assisted with this and did some spectacular special effects blood and gore on our 'Sweeney' model- as they were considered unsuitable for inclusion they're not in the mag but will be posted her and on FB as soon as I can. A special thank you to Paul Merchant of 'Charles Fox' Covent Garden, London for supplying products from the store. I try to pop in for products when am in London and love the massive range of  Kryolan makeup

I also write a feature detailing how to achieve our cover girl look for our model Sula Powell' hair where I used makeup supplied by Illamasqua  Glasgow
I am a huge fan of their products and have have had  them in my kit since they formed the company. I have used their products in magazines, bridal, film and video and they are amazing-check them out! I styled Sula's hair using While in London for Fashion Week I also squeezed in a masterclass with Illamasqua trainer Adam John who as well as being uber -talented is such a lovely person and so giving.
As well as Sula being included in a feature about Kinettles House Hotel , where she exudes full-on Hollywood Glamour she is also on the front cover. I have worked with Sula lots of times and despite being only 16 she is very mature in outlook and she's definitely going places! Lousie Beattie photographed the shoot and did a fantastic job as always

and  'The Frockery's Alison Preuss supplied some amazing period outfits and accessories and has very affordable, sought-after pieces which can be purchased on line.

Samantha McEwen is a young, talented fashion designer who as well as taking the fashion world by storm is also a fellow Dundonian. Her label is'Isolated Heroes' and her work is unique, colourful and bold and therefore my hair and makeup had to reflect this. Sam's work sells on ASOS and with photographer Emma Alexander, models Sula Powell (Superior) Ciara Howie (Colours) and Josh Liandrou and Stefania Ottelli Zoletti  (Superior) we created some striking looks for the 2 shoots. Hello everyone -it's great to be back blogging about all things in my hair and makeup world! I can't believe I haven't updated since Nov '11-it's been so busy, however I want to keep you all updated about what's going on in all things SC Makeup Artistry. Since then I have had the pure joy of being involved in many weddings all over Scotland and also Brides flying in from all over the world to be married at our wonderful Scottish Venues and Castles. I still have some bookings left for some dates this year and am steadily booking up for 2013, I have had requests for 2014 but am afraid I don't reserve for so far ahead (no Diary!) I hate to disappoint and have had up to 3-4 requests for same date weddings so please book early for your Special Day. Roxburgh House/Macmillan Day Care

I am now providing monthly makeup sessions and tips in a therapeutic setting for patients receiving specialist palliative care. The first session was very enjoyable and rewarding for me and from the feedback the patients enjoyed it also-looking forward to the next session in a couple of weeks time. The staff do an amazing job and it really is such an uplifting and happy place. They are also collecting for the Romanian Shoe Box appeal so if anyone would like to donate toys, toothbrushes, pencil, paints etc o anything a child would like that would fit in a shoe box you can hand in to :

'INVITE' Magazine

I am delighted to have been asked to be a feature writer and hair and makeup artist for 'Invite' magazine which is a new events magazine which will be launched early next year! Looking forward to being part of a professional and creative team for a Dundee-based publication which will be available to purchase in WH Smiths' throughout Scotland.  The premier issue will feature our chosen model, Bora and will also have steps on how to achieve her hair and makeup style and a question and answer beauty feature. LONDON FASHION WEEK (AUTUMN '011)

I'm delighted and very honoured to have been chosen to be part of Lan Ngyuen's team at LFW and will be heading the middle of September. It is going to be amazing and is my 2nd time at LFW -it is one of the most amazing things for a hair/makeup artist to experience and can only be described as very organised chaos and drama! It's fantastic to be one very small cog in a large wheel and to see the designer's collections and work with other artists and Toni & Guy etc is wonderful. I will be updating on this very soon.  I was recommended by Lyndsey Allan (Dancer/Choreographer and Bunny Girl) to create hair and makeup for Dress Designer Christina Beth Kean's new collection. The venue was the 'Mansion House' -Glasgow and as it was an early start I travelled through the evening before. John Johnston (Photographer) shot the collection and Rachel Monaghan modelled.
